The School
This program is located on an old hunting estate of the Chigi family situated just 25 km from the center of Rome and 1.3 km from the Roman coast. The name derives from the magnificent baroque castle, frescoed by the famous Pietro Da Cortona in the 1620's, which lies in the midst of a centuries-old pine wood. Thirty-five hectares around the castle are still privately owned by the Chigi family and it is here that a member of the family decided to build a tourist village.
Rome with its 2000 years of history is certainly unique among other European cities. It was the birthplace of one of the most ancient civilizations that ruled over and influenced peoples and cultures spread over a territory that included most of Europe, North Africa and a part of the Middle East.
The Roman civilization lasted more then 1000 years (from 500 BC to about 900 AD) and has left its mark in every field of human knowledge; in the arts, law, engineering, architecture, theater, social organization etc. Rome is the only city, not only in Europe but also in Italy, that has such a rich and varied artistic heritage that goes from the Classic to the late Renaissance.
But it is not only a city full of monuments and palaces. It is also a modern and dynamic city with 4 million inhabitants, 84 theaters, 70 museums, 75 cinemas, an indefinite number of restaurants and a stimulating cultural calendar. The climate is mild throughout the year and its proximity to the sea (25 km), to the mountains (70 km), the countryside and the hills of the "Castelli Romani" (just outside the city) make it an ideal place not only for the tourist who comes to Rome for a few days but also for those who would like to come and study the Italian language and culture.
The school was one of the first schools to adopt a fully communicative approach to the teaching of Italian, and the approach is being updated all the time. Language is never presented out of context; and grammar, phonology, lexis and all other features of actual language use in everyday situations are analyzed. A wide variety of up-to-date authentic material is used in class, thus giving the students valuable information about modern-day Italian culture and society at the same time as developing the students' authentic linguistic and communicative skills. Amongst the principal techniques and procedures employed in class are: communicative tasks, group work, and dramatization. The accent is on activity rather than on passive receptivity.
