The School
There are 2 campus options: Athens & Crete
• Athens, the capital of Greece and one of the oldest cities in the world, is pervaded by the spirit of ancient myths. The city is busy and creative from morning to night, carefree and lovely from evening to dawn. A history of more than 2500 years is evident in every crossroad: the hill of Acropolis with the Parthenon, the nearby Roman Theatre, the Ancient Agora, the Roman Market, the remains of Byzantine Monastic life in Kessariani and Dafni Monastery, where the frescoes are as lively as they were 1500 years ago.
The Athens campus was founded in 1971 and is located in the center of Athens near the university, the Polytechnic School, the National Library, the Archaeological Museum and many other places of interest. The courses have been developed to suit real life situations so that students may gain full benefit of learning a foreign language in the country where it is spoken. All the teachers hold university degrees and are native speakers who have experience in teaching Greek as a second language.
• Chania is a picturesque city on the northwest coast of Crete. Walking in Chania means coming across Minoan remains as well as Byzantine, Venetian, Ottoman and Neo-Classical landmarks, left by the different civilizations which flourished on the island and have been kept alive in the traditions and customs of the inhabitants. The Venetian harbor of Chania is ringed with restaurants, taverns, cafeterias and ouzo bars. In the city one can find archaeological and historical museums, Venetian churches, Greek churches with old Byzantine frescoes, the Municipal Market, the Halepa Quarter and much more.
The Chania campus is a 2-floored traditional building. It is located in the area of "Koum-kapi", which is famous for its beauty and tourist attraction. In addition, not only is our new building very near the old town of Chania, but near the city center as well. There are cafes, restaurants, Internet cafe around the school, as well as the open-air theatre of East Trench, where cultural events are held during summer time. With a view of the Venice walls of the city, the students can have their lessons in the three spacious classrooms that our school supplies. the school also provides the students with a kitchen where they can practice preparing Greek traditional plates and try cooking experiences. At the front of the school there is a garden and on its first floor there is a veranda with a view of the city.
The school’s initial aim was to teach Greek to speakers of other languages who wished to study at Greek institutions of vocational and technological training. In this respect, it might be the first school devoted to the teaching of Greek to foreigners. Since 1980 it offers courses to all speakers of other languages who want to learn Greek. From the beginning of its operation the school has been involved in the development of educational material for the teaching of Greek; both in standard printed form as well as in CD-ROM.
